Bringing evergreen boughs into the home dates back as far as ancient Egypt and Rome. Long before the advent of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for peoples throughout the world. In winter, they would hang evergreen boughs of pine, spruce, and fir trees over their doors and windows to ward off illness and bring good luck.
The Christmas tree tradition as we now know it started in the 16th century when devout German Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. It is a widely believed that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, was the first person to add lighted candles to a tree. Walking home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was inspired by the beauty of stars twinkling between evergreens branches. To recreate the scene for his family, he brought a tree into the house and wired its branches with lighted candles.
