Adult dragonflies are characterized by large, multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings and an elongated body. Dragonflies are sometimes mistaken for the related group of insects called damselflies, the difference being primarily with the way the two insects hold their wings and the way they fly. Many dragonflies have brilliant iridescent or metallic colors making them especially visible in flight.
Dragonflies are predators, both in their aquatic larval stage, when they are known as nymphs or naiads, and as adults. They are fast, agile fliers, sometimes migrating across oceans, and often live near water.
Traditional medicine in Japan and China uses dragonflies, and they are caught for food in Indonesia. In many cultures, dragonflies are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness.
Like dragons, dragonflies have been immortalized in mythology all over the world. Native Americans believe the insect was actually once a dragon who was tricked into shape-shifting to the form of a dragonfly by a coyote. Once the dragon took the form of the dragonfly, it couldn’t shift back. The insect is attributed magical properties such as the representation of the cycles of life, the psyche, renewal and transcendence. It is also believed in some cultures that dragonflies can travel between dimensions and are messengers of dreams. The ability to travel between dimensions also connects them with fairies, nature spirits and the realms of other magical creatures.
