Nero Fiddles While Rome Burns Abstract. On July 18, 64 CE, a fire started in the Circus Maximus stadium in Rome. When the fire was finally extinguished six days later, 10 of Rome's 14 districts had burned. Ancient historians blamed Rome's infamous emperor, Nero, for the fire.
This digital painting expertly depicts the calamity, chaos and fear that must have been the hallmark of this infamous day in history. Angry red and orange flames engulf buildings while dark smoke billows into the sky. Figures can be seen fleeing the scene.
