Description
Panoramic view of Lake Lugano, Switzerland from the Summit of Mount Bré.
While visiting Italy and Switzerland this past Fall, my companions and I took the funicular from Lugano, Switzerland to the top of Mount Bré. Once we arrived at the summit, we spent time taking in the views and enjoying a beverage at one of the restaurants with a sunny terrace. In addition to providing fabulous views of the bay of Lugano and the Pennine Alps and the Bernese Alps the small mountain is considered one of the sunniest points in Switzerland.
The village of Bré has been able to retain the characteristics of an ancient rural village. In the church of San Fedele, you will find art by Pasquale Gilardi, also called Lelèn, and the frescoes by Joseph Birò. In the Schmid Museum there are works of Aligu Sassu, Armando Losa, Emilio Rissone, Giuliano Togni, Giancarlo Tamagni, Piergiorgio Piffaretti and others.
If you have the time (about two hours) and the energy, many people take the funicular up and hike down the mountain. The views are rewarding, but the path is steep.
