Description
The Piazza del Campo, Siena, Italy, UNESCO world heritage site. This area is comprised of a large, shell-shaped square called the Piazza del Campo, which is the focus of Siena's civic life.
Many visit Siena to view the Corsa del Palio, the famous medieval horse races that are held twice annually on the brick foundation of Piazza del Campo.
Siena was built in the location where three ancient hilltop towns merged together. The main square, commonly called “il Campo” was built on the intersection of the three main roads that lead to and from Siena, destined to be a neutral ground where political and civic holidays could be celebrated. Prior to the building of Siena in 1297, the government created guidelines for the area. During construction, the architectural form of the square and the buildings laid out in the guidelines was strictly enforced, and any structure not adhering to the guidelines was demolished.
