Description
Pink and purple Lilac branch in bloom on a white splattered background. Watercolor by Deborah League.
My parents used to have a magnificent lilac bush in their front yard. It must have reached a height of 10 feet. We have several family photos in front of that fragrant bush and the flowers used to fill our home. Perhaps it is for this reason I'm so fond of the lushly dense and moody Lilac.
Did you know that according to Greek mythology, Lilacs are named for a beautiful nymph named Syringa. Captivated by her beauty, Pan, the god of the forests and fields, chased Syringa through the forest. Frightened by Pan's affections, Syringa escaped him by turning herself into an aromatic Lilac bush.
