Description
Whimsical, colorful pheasant looks straight into the camera with such an expression - is it surprise, joy, confusion? You decide. Painted in portrait orientation by Deborah League.
The pheasant is native to Asia and has been widely introduced elsewhere as a game bird. Ring-necked pheasant is the name used for the species in North America. The bird is one of the world's most hunted having been introduced for that purpose to many regions, and is also common on game farms where it is commercially bred. The ring-necked pheasant is the state bird of South Dakota, one of only three U.S. state birds that is not a species native to the United States.
The adult male has a long brown tail streaked with black and body plumage that is marked with bright gold or copper-red and chestnut-brown feathers with iridescent shades of green and purple. The rump of the bird is sometimes blue. The wing are white or cream. The head is bottle green with a small crest and distinctive red wattle. Behind the face are two ear-tufts, that make the pheasant more alert
