Artist's Description
Two green and yellow Bartlett or Williams pears with long brown stems watercolor still life. Light and shadow plays along the luscious curves of two voluptuous pears nestled close to one another in this delightful painting. The mottled green and yellow skin is speckled with brown suggesting the ripening process. Rough stems in shades of brown emerge from the top of both pears.
Pears are among the world's oldest cultivated fruits, with mention of them occurring first in 5000 BC. Later, the Greek poet laureate Homer lauded pears as a “gift of the gods." Much later, early colonists brought the first pear trees to America’s eastern settlements where they thrived and were prized for their delicate flavor, buttery texture, and long storage life.
Today in the US pears are mostly grown in the Northwest. The first arrival of pear trees to Oregon and Washington came with the pioneers. These trees found their way to the region by way of the Lewis and Clark Trail.
