Nothing can lift your spirits quite like a sunflower; warm and inviting, bright and cheerful.
Did you know their yellow petals are also known as rays? Their unmistakable sun-like appearance has made them a guaranteed people pleaser.
Sunflowers come in a number of varieties—ranging from small to very large, with petals shaded from yellow to red. But, there is more to a sunflower than meets the eye. While they are stunningly beautiful, they also are rich in history and meaning.
Sunflowers have come to symbolize adoration, loyalty and longevity. Much of the meaning of sunflowers stems from its namesake, the sun itself. Sunflowers are happy flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy.
Artists throughout history have depicted the sunflower’s unique splendor—those of the Impressionist era were especially fond on the flower. Wild sunflowers are often photographed with their tall stalks and bright petals stretched towards the sun. This behavior is known as phototropism.
While sunflowers are recognized and admired for their sunny charm and delightful disposition, these beauties are also sourced for their seeds, as well as oils used for cooking and skin emollients. For a flower that reflects so many of the sun’s positive characteristics, it isn’t surprising that people enjoy basking in the sunflower’s warming glow so much.
