Description
Cicada Exoskeleton On Leaf.
Part prehistoric, part alien looking, the skin left behind by the cicada when it molts looks like something straight out of the movies. Because the exoskeleton is hard, molting is the only way for the insect to continue growing. Scary looking as they may be, the creatures pose no harm to humans.
Cicadas are mostly beneficial. They prune mature trees, aerate the soil, and once they die, their bodies serve as an important source of nitrogen for growing trees. They also serve as food for just about anything with an insectivorous diet.
