Description
Prayer plant Inflorescence, photography. Featured is a yellow inflorescence among the leaves of the plant. The bloom is upright, about 10 inches long, and consists of stacked floral bracts with small flowers peeking out at the edges. The tropical plant is an herbaceous perennial that grows from an underground rhizome and produces very large green leaves and striking yellow inflorescences resembling a baby's rattle. I found this plant while hiking in Hawaii.
Prayer plants are named after their leaves, which fold up at night like hands in prayer. Because of this behavior, the plant is associated with gratitude, devotion, and focus. In some cultures, prayer plants are also believed to bring good luck and positive energy.
