Description
Ancient Italian doors with decorative locks in blue. On a recent trip to Northern Italy with friends, we stayed for a few days in the town of Modena. In addition to visiting the places where Parmesan Reggiano, balsamic vinegar and Ferraris are made, we also spent time walking the beautiful town. It was here that I came upon these beautiful old wooden doors with decorative locks. The faces carved into the locks are both forbidding and welcoming. Photo taken by Deborah League in Modena, Italy.
Modena, a city 90 miles north of Florence, in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has been inhabited on and off since the Iron Age. Evidence indicates the area has been home to a permanent settlement since the 3rd century BC. During the Roman era, Modena was hugely important due to its central location and several Roman roads passed through it. In the Middle Ages, the rule of the city changed several times but it remained an important hub and eventually became part of Italy.
Today, Modena, which lies equal distance between Bologna and Parma is home to a wide variety of attractions. With a population of 184,000 the city ranks as one of the largest in the region. The area is an important economic powerhouse with the main driver of it's economy being car manufacturing, primarily by Ferrari and Maserati.
