Description
Original watercolor depicts a handsome green and turquoise bullfrog sitting on a fountain edge waiting for his princess to arrive. This lovely gentleman will add interest and whimsey to the walls of any room in your home! My husband photographed this guy sitting on our fountain one day this past summer. Painted in varying shades of green and blue by Deborah League.
The bullfrog has an olive green back and sides blotched with brownish markings and a whitish belly spotted with yellow or grey. They eat crayfish, snails, water beetles, dragonfly larvae, fish, small turtles, young water birds and other frogs. Nocturnal predators, they will ambush and eat just about anything they can fit in their ample mouths, including insects, mice, fish, birds, and snakes. They sit quietly and wait for prey to pass by, then lunge with their powerful hind legs, mouths open wide.
The call of the bullfrog is deep and resonant, resembliing the mooing of a cow, hence its name. Only males emit this trademark sound, and their choruses can be heard during the day or night.
Bullfrogs are the most wide-ranging of all North American amphibians, found in freshwater ponds, lakes, and marshes from Nova Scotia, Canada, throughout the continental United States, and as far south as Mexico and Cuba. They have even found their way to Europe, South America, and Asia.
Males are highly territorial and will aggressively guard their land. Females are slightly larger than males.
